The Shield logo is one of the most recognisable symbols in sport and business. Founded by the National Basketball League (NBA) in 1963, the Shield has since become one of the most recognized professional league emblems in North America. The shield is comprised of seven horizontal lines, each featuring a specific colour. These colours are white, red, black, blue, indigo and silver. The idea behind the colours was that they represented the seven different positions that the team held in the NBA.
The most notable feature of the shield is that it is only found on the right hand side of the jersey. This is because the left and right hands are not allowed to wear the logo at any time during games. In addition to this, the colours were designed so that if an error occurred, there would be enough white to clearly see which player's fingers were responsible.
As mentioned, the design of the shield was the brainchild of the NBA's legendary coach, Pat Riley. He decided that the shape of the logo should be something that represented the fierce competition that existed within the league. He based the colours around the seven codes of basketball and made them darker and more sinister looking as teams entered the playoffs. The idea being that the team that was surviving would represent the spirit of the game better than the team that was eliminated. The result was a very effective marketing strategy, and the use of the shield logo has continued to this day.
However, the use of the shield has its disadvantages as well. The negative side of the shield design is that it can easily confuse the viewer when a player is trying to play his or her way out of a double team. The fact that there are no bright contrasting colours to break up the solid blocks makes it even harder for the viewer to identify who is responsible for the offensive or defensive tries. For this reason, the use of the shield logo on uniforms and clothing has decreased over the years.
However, this particular problem is quite hard to solve given that some players, especially in smaller teams, have stopped wearing the shield logo because they feel that it draws too much attention to them. It is therefore hard to get a consistent message across when your team is represented by a uniform that includes the shield logo. Also, the new CBA rules that prohibit the logo from appearing on any part of the uniform except for the collar has only made this problem worse.
The use of the shield in sports is a rich and colourful history that deserves to be recognised. However, there are some aspects of the design that need to be improved if we are to continue to convey the right message to young fans and the general public. With the new CBA rule changes, for example, it may be possible to reduce the negative impact that the stylised shield can have on the team. If you want to take advantage of these changes, you may want to consult a sports management specialist who can give you advice about the best way to incorporate the shield into your team designs and strategies. The right approach and use of the emblem by your club can go a long way towards helping to promote the brand and image that will ensure that your team remains a force to be reckoned with for many years to come.
