Apple logo tattoos are everywhere and they're very popular, especially in the industry. According to one of the more famous ones, the apple represents the physical falling fruit which led Isaac Newton to find the force of gravity. Another possibility? So what's it all about, you might ask? Mr Janoff explains the mystery of the apple during an interview back in 2021:
The simple answer is that the apple logo is based on a simple cartoon character that was created by an artist for a marketing campaign – originally meant to represent the firm at an advertising conference. When the image was drawn by the artist, it looked like an “apple” but when it was sent to a graphic designer, the company wanted it to look more like a “pear”. After much brainstorming, they hit upon that the “pear” could be turned into an “apple” and thus the design we know today as the apple logo. Two very famous logos also have something in common; they both contain a bright green colour, and they both feature a “C” shape.
However, many experts believe that this particular example of a “bitten apple” logo wasn't the original design. In fact it can be argued that it probably wasn't even their idea at all! In 18utan, farmers had used the bark of a special tree to create the first ever official logo! A similar process was used at the patent office in Germany where a teak tree was carved into a shape resembling the modern-day Apple logo.
Another interesting point made by Mr. Janoff is that the first logo was designed in a French garden – in other words, an amateur. He explained that this was because of the “seeds” that were being used to create the logo. Today we use computer fonts, so what difference can there be? I guess it's all a matter of perspective…
Regardless of how or who created the logo, there can't be denied that the image has become one of the most recognised icons of our time. It was also this iconography which initially attracted many to the “boards and squares” method of designing a logo back in the days. And of course, with the success of the apple product, this iconography has spread worldwide.
